Chapter 9
Several days had passed, and I was at a standstill. I tried contacting Krieg & Williamson, but never received a call back, even though the receptionist claimed sheâd pass on a message. No response from Liquid Investors from the message I left about Boss Builders. It would seem no one wanted to talk to a gumshoe about this situation, which angered me.
The crime scene of the two dead men had revealed no clues beyond guesses. The deaths were suspicious, the results still forthcoming from the coroner. Christmas was fourteen days away and I wanted a viable solution before the holidays. Since the bald man and his partner were dead, there was no crime anymore for the police to investigate when it came to the stabbing.
The old abandoned building was now open again for the homeless to go back to, their stuff still there. After encouragement from me, T was going to watch after things as best as he could. The question I asked myselfâwas the attempt to move the homeless out of the space over now? There was no reason to believe that their plan was complete, for the objective still existed for getting them out of there, whatever it may be. I needed to learn what their true motives were.
Every idea that came to mind led me to the same conclusion. I needed to join the homeless, to become one of them. Iâd let my facial hair grow out and went to a thrift store to find some old worn-out clothing to blend in. I planned to live among them and see what I could discover.
My first day in their world was a tough one. I wasnât used to surviving in the cold, wind and snow for hours at a time. You learned to move around as much as you could, to keep the blood flowing. T helped to keep me focused, telling me tricks he used to make it more bearable. Using trees, walls and any type of solid structures as barriers to the frosty wind. Locating heat sources like vents of exhaust from buildings and even from grates built in the ground where you could find warmer air rising. I did have my cell phone and gun, in case I needed it, as well as packaged food and water to get me by. But I was trying to live as much as they lived, wandering among them, trying to blend in.
When it got late, close to midnight, I did go back to my place and slept. I knew I couldnât sleep in these conditions. How did they do it? I could barely make it to the fifteen-hour mark without going insane. They lived this way every second of the day, with little or nothing, other than what they were able to obtain from handouts. No one should ever have to survive this way. Yet tens of thousands across our great country did. It was hard to feel great living in such a rich society as ours when so many had so little.
